Sahara solar project plans to appear next year

5 octobre 2011

The Saraha solar initiative will sketch out plans for its first power plant next year, reports Bloomberg.

The initiative, backed by German turbine maker Siemens AG and Deutsche Bank, will see a €600 million (£518 million) station built in Morocco, which was chosen to host the first plant due to the two undersea cables that link it to Europe and because it has a government that backs renewable energy expansion.

The aim of the project is to generate power across the North African desert for Mediterranean-area consumers. According to Dii GmbH, the project management company for the scheme, it requires a few more months of planning before construction can begin on the 150-megawatt pilot plant.

Dii's chief executive Paul van Son said that he was "very confident" that concrete steps would be taken in 2012, adding that financial support for the Munich-based initiative is being negotiated with governments in North Africa and Europe.

It was announced recently that Camco had been awarded two contracts for energy infrastructure projects in East Africa.
