Vox Telecom to extend internet services to rural South Africa

17 janvier 2012

Vox Telecom Ltd has announced that it plans to offer low-cost broadband services to remote areas of South Africa that are not covered by traditional telecommunications infrastructure.

To this end, the firm said that it will use a satellite that is to be launched by Yahsat - a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi government-owned Mubadala Development Co - next month, Business Day has reported.

According to the news provider, the telecommunications firm has already agreed to partner with Yahsat.

The partnership should ensure that firm sells to capacity and markets the satellite in South Africa, which is already one of the most technologically-savvy countries in Africa.

Vox Telecom hopes that the service will be in full operation by June and after just three years, the firm predicts that it will have as many as 40,000 subscribers.

Earlier this week, Frost & Sullivan said that internet use in Africa has seen unprecedented growth over the last decade, recording an impressive increase of 2,000 per cent.
