Toyota to build energy plants in Kenya
Japanese firm Toyota is to build new geothermal energy plants in Kenya, reports AllAfrica.com
The Japanese firm has won a bid to construct a new generating facility and upgrade another at a total cost of 40 billion Kenyan shillings (£250 million).
Beating a consortium of four other bidders, the firm will now create a new plant that will generate 140 MW of power, as well as upgrade the capacity of an existing facility by 140 MW. The location of the plants have not yet been revealed.
The country's prime minister Raila Odinga said that the projects "mark the beginning of Kenya's journey to transform its energy sector and put the country on the path to green economic growth".
By 2014, geothermal capacity in the African nation will be 430 MW, but Kenya could eventually produce 7,000 MW according to AllAfrica.com.
Representatives from Comesa, East African Community and the International Authority of Development recently met to discuss future infrastructure initiatives, with the hope of attracting investments of 270 billion Kenyan shillings from various businesses.
