Tanzania set for road improvements

The Tanzanian government has announced ambitious plans to make major improvements to the country's road network, which is stifling its potential for economic growth, Tanzania Daily News has reported.

As much as $6.72 billion has been set aside to upgrade the network, which will help to facilitate the flow of consumer goods and, on a more basic level, the movement of people throughout the country, which is an increasingly popular tourist destination.

The money is to be invested during the 2012-13 year by Tanzania National Roads Agency, explained John Kalupale, the regional manager.

He explained that as much as $3.239 billion is to be spent on improving regional roads in Tanzania, while the remaining $3.5 billion will go towards improving trunk roads.

Improvements to the road system should help to stimulate economic growth in the country, with the government determined to initiate accelerated expansion through a series of infrastructure projects.
