Funding agreed for new dam in Sudan

As much as $30 million is to be used to build a dam on Atabarah river in Sudan, allafrica.com has reported.

The move was announced by Suleiman Al-Herbish, the director general of the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), who revealed that he has always been intrigued by various developments projects in Sudan.

In fact, since the OFID was founded in the mid-1970s, Mr Al-Herbish said that it has given an impressive $256 million for the purpose of developmental projects in the east African state.

Mahmood Hassan Al-Amin, the Sudanese ambassador to Vienna, welcomed the news, observing that the country as a whole is appreciative of the ongoing financial support from the OFID.

The collaboration, he explained, covers a number of areas that are critical to the country's economy, including agriculture, irrigation and power generation, in addition to transport and education.

He added that the dam will help to improve the standard of living for people in the area.
