Experts create Trans African Highways plan

Experts have implemented a plan and set of recommendations to help speed up the Trans African Highways (TAH) development, reports

The TAH will help accelerate the overall socioeconomic development process in Africa by boosting infrastructure and road transport, and the new plan focuses on improving the design construction and operation of African regional road networks.

Plans were drawn up during a meeting at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The outcome of the meeting is expected to be considered by delegates at the forthcoming Second African Union Commission (AUC) conference in November 2011.

According to, experts recommended that minimal continental norms and standards for construction and design are implemented during the TAH programme.

"Intergovernmental agreement by the sector ministers" will strengthen the coordination and implementation of the development, the experts continued.

The Development Bank of Southern Africa recently announced that it had approved a loan to Zimbabwe for the development of an 801 km road that will link the east and west of the country.
