AfDB-Rwanda and Burundi launch one stop border post to accelerate integration

The Bank received from the Governments of the Republic of Rwanda and Republic of Burundi, an invitation to witness the official launching ceremony of the One stop border post which took place on Wednesday 17th July 2013 at Ruhwa.

The One-Stop Border Post has been developed as part of the Multinational Nyamitanga-Ruhwa-Rusizi-Ntendezi-Mwityazo Road Project to address a major bottleneck of excessive delays experienced in cargo clearance at the border point linking Rwanda and Burundi.

The cross border time dropped from more than 30min to maximum 5min today. The project was financed by the Bank. The total Bank’s funding, amounting to UA 100 million in grant (of which UA 50.62 million for Rwanda and UA 49.38 Million for Burundi) supported the construction a total length of 101km of the main road (of which 50km in Rwanda and 51km in Burundi) in addition to the One Stop Border Post (OSBP) facilities.

Other important activities under this project are communities the construction of feeder roads and rehabilitation of socioeconomic infrastructures in Burundi (schools & health centers) along the route completed, Capacity building for improved border services, and for executing agencies and public education on road safety, environmental protection and Sexual Transmitted Infections in project area.

The official launching of Ruhwa was marked by the presence of Alexis Nzahabwanimana, Rwandan State Minister in charge of Transport and Déogratias Rurimunzu Burundian Minister of Transport Public Works and Equipment.

The Bank was represented at the occasion by M. Souaré, Chief transport Engineer and Task Manager of the project, accompanied by Burundi CPO, Brice Mikponhoué and transport sector experts from Rwanda and Burundi Field Offices.
