Construction to begin on Winelands project

12 October 2011

The news came as the city of Cape Town council said it had applied to the Western Cape high court for an interim interdict to stop the project, reports Engineering News.

Costing around R10 billion (£800,000), the finished road is expected to be 175 km long in total, with 105 km running from the Old Oak interchange to Sandhills and the remaining 70 km spanning the Swartklip interchange to Bot river.

Sanral, the South African National Roads Agency, said that the project will create 5,000 jobs during the construction phase and 600 more jobs through operation and maintenance activities.

The project would "increase road capacity, improve safety and offer cost savings in terms of lower vehicle running costs and less time spent on the road," the industry body added.

The Development Bank of Southern Africa recently announced that it had approved a loan to Zimbabwe for the development of an 801 km road that will link the east and west of the country.
