Nigeria: New road network 'on schedule'

22 July 2012

The Lagos state government has revealed it is pleased with the rate of progress of work on the ten-lane Lagos-Badagry Expressway project, Vanguard reports.

Dr Obafemi Hamzat, commissioner for works and infrastructure, expressed confidence that the new road network would be in full operation by 2015, easing the movement of people throughout the region.

"It has become necessary to reiterate the plan of the administration in the face of various commentaries on the pace of work by contractors; which for many people, will negatively impact on the delivery of the projects," commented Dr Hamzat.

"While we are elated that people are monitoring and concerned about the project, it is necessary for us to assure them of the fact that the project is alive and well. It is actually going on according to plan."

Such projects are key to economic growth and the Nigerian government is currently investing sizeable sums in other similar projects elsewhere in the country.
