China finances road construction in Niger

11 May 2011

China has granted 12.3 million dollars to Niger to finance a road infrastructure construction program in the city of Niamey.

The project consists of the construction of roads adjoining the second bridge of the city, reported the APA press agency last Friday.

"This aid is intended for the construction of ramps which will extend the second bridge in Niamey, the construction of which has just been completed. It will also be used for other projects, as agreed between Niger and China" said Mohamed Bazoum, Nigerian Minister for foreign affairs.

This announcement precedes the signature of a protocol of agreement, Monday last, between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS, which includes Niger) and India.

The aim is to strengthen multi-sectorial cooperation in nine domains, according to a press release from ECOWAS received by the PANA press agency.

These sectors are banking, food and agriculture, building and road construction, rail transport and other modes of communication.
