ICA Annual Meeting to focus on renewable energy initiatives

20 October 2015

Implementing Renewable Energy Initiatives in Africa will be the focus of the 11th Annual Meeting of the Infrastructure Consortium for Africa (ICA), which will take place in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, on 16 and 17 November 2015.

The meeting is jointly organised by the German government and the African Development Bank (AfDB), and hosted by the Bank at its office in Abidjan. The 2-day event includes a plenary session on Tuesday 17th November which focuses on the theme of the meeting as set forth in a background paper on renewable energy in Africa commissioned by the ICA.

Participants at the meeting will consider the institutional landscape for regional renewable energy initiatives, explore the role of the private sector in promoting clean energy on the continent and recommend ways to move towards a goal of generating 100 GW of renewable energy in Africa by 2030.Experiences and lessons learnt from recent renewable energy projects reaching financial close will also be shared by a select group of invited guests spanning developers/investors, public sector counterparts, utilities and lenders.

Energy usage in Africa is expected to increase by 77% from current levels by 2030, requiring a doubling of today's generation capacity, to 400 GW.  For 100 GW of this capacity to be made up of renewable energy would require rates of investment in clean energy development to double from current levels, to between US$ 10 and 12 billion per annum.

With the ICA Secretariat continuing its planning for the Annual Meeting, Mohamed Hassan, ICA Coordinator, says the event will mark a milestone in the evolution of the Consortium, as the Secretariat has recently relocated to Abidjan from Tunis, adding:

"We are delighted this year's Annual Meeting will take place here at the African Development Bank's headquarters and I'd like to thank the Bank for offering to host the meeting, and for organising it jointly with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development."
