ICA to provide financial support for Nile Basin donor conference

12 May 2016

The Infrastructure Consortium for Africa (ICA) is to co-finance the 1st Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Programme (NELSAP) investment conference, due to take place on 2 June 2016 in Nairobi.

One of two investment programmes under the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI), NELSAP promotes investment in power development & trade, river basin management & development, agricultural trade & productivity and fisheries & watershed management.

The planned conference is expected to achieve the following outputs:

a) Securing financial commitments or pledges for NELSAP Investment portfolio projects from development partners, investment banks, the private sector and other sources of finance;
b) Offering an appropriate forum to deliberate on issues related to sustainable economic development in NEL sub-basin;
c) Build knowledge on new funding windows, instruments and modalities.

The ICA’s funding will be used to support NELSAP to prepare and implement the investment conference through procuring a lead conference consultant and a communications consultant, funding consultative and preparatory meetings and publishing material.

This support is an example of the work of the ICA’s Water Platform, which strives to scale-up financing for sustainable water infrastructure in Africa. Key objectives of the Water Platform are to facilitate regional water infrastructure programmes and initiatives, and to encourage greater co-operation and dialogue between these initiatives and sources of water infrastructure finance.
