ICA Organizes a Renewable Energy Virtual Working Group

2 June 2013

ICA Organizes a Renewable Energy Virtual Working Group  > With Assistance from the ICA Secretariat office in Tunisia, ICA members and other African stakeholders have re-launched a Virtual Working Group on African Power issues.  On May 2nd, 2013, The US State Department, the US Department for Energy and the US Department of Treasury led the discussions via video-conference on Solar energy,- which brought together a group of African countries to discuss a case study of the success of South Africa’s solar power initiative and the new financing mechanisms available to support renewable energy generation.

Participants included representatives from the U.S. government, The U.S. Energy Association, representatives from The African Development Bank, The Burkino Faso Ministry of Mines, Quarries and Energy, The [Burkino Faso] National Center for Scientific and Technological Research, The Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering; SNV (The Dutch International Development Agency), Zenith Corporation, Solarcom Environment, The Niger Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, The Niger National Center for Solar Energy, and many private sector representatives from Zimbabwe , Botswana and other countries within Africa.

The discussions at this May 2nd meeting were focused on understanding the success of the South African renewable energy environment.  The South African solar power experience is rooted in the country’s 2010 strategic plan – known as The Integrated Resources Plan; which endorsed the full utilization of all sources of electricity while targeting a 34% reduction in carbon emissions. Under the South African Integrated Resources Plan the government set a goal of making 42% of all new electricity generation renewable - (17,000 MW from 2010-2030).  ICA plan to have another videoconference session in September 2013, which will discuss issues around Biofuels development in Africa.
