Rwanda to exploit nuclear energy

Rwanda is to join the club of countries which exploit nuclear energy, reports a government press release published last Thursday.

The country will fully ratify the treaty of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), solely for civil use.

The Rwandan Parliament adopted a bill last week, and the law will be promulgated by President Paul Kagamé in three months.

"By ratifying the atomic energy treaty, Rwanda wants to strengthen sectors such as health, water, agriculture and the environment, and the country will benefit from an annual loan of 70 million dollars provided by the AIEA", explained the Rwandan Minister of State for Energy, Coletta Ruhamya, in a quote by the Xinhua press agency.

Meanwhile, last Wednesday Belgium and Rwanda concluded a cooperation agreement for the period 2011-2014, totaling 160 million euros, announced the Belgian minister for Development Cooperation, Mr. Chastel.

The funds will be devoted to the sectors of health, energy and decentralization, reports the newspaper Le Vif.
