Two new rail lines in Chad

March 14: Chad has signed an agreement to the value of 7.5 billion dollars with Chinese group CCECC for the construction of a rail line which will run for 1,344 Km.

Work will commence before the start of 2012 and will be carried out in two stages, it was reported by the newspaper Agefi Quotidien.

The first stage, estimated to take four years, will connect the town of Abéché (East) to that of Adré, close to the Sudanese border. It is also intended to link the town of Moundou (South-West) to Koutéré, which is near to the border with Cameroon.

The second phase of the works will consist of installing a link between the two rail lines in order to connect Moundou to Abéché via the capital, N'Djamena.

So this is a project of huge strategic importance to Chad. It will improve access to the Red Sea as well as to the Atlantic Ocean and will thus stimulate the economic growth of the region.
