South Africa: Rustenburg announces tenders for rapid transport project

The first of a number of tenders for the Rustenburg local municipality’s (RLM’s) R3-billion Rustenburg Rapid Transport (RRT) project, which is aimed at providing transport to half-a-million Rustenburg residents from 2015, was announced this week.

The RLM invited bidders to tender for the construction of a section of the North-West RRT Corridor, topographical and structural survey services and environmental-impact assessment (EIA) services.

The purpose of the topographical survey would be to gather data about the natural and manmade features of the surrounding land, including its elevations. The EIA is a procedure that will ensure that the environmental implications of the system are taken into account, particularly in areas where watercourses run close to the RRT routes.

“The survey and EIA would be required before construction can start on certain parts of the trunk routes and form part of the overall planning on the project,” the municipality said in a statement.
