South Africa: Ferrum iron-ore study delayed pending Waterberg infrastructure solution

JOHANNESBURG – ASX- and JSE-listed Ferrum Crescent on Friday said it had deferred completion of the definitive feasibility study (DFS) for its Moonlight project to the fourth quarter, pending a potentially “more optimal” infrastructure solution for the Waterberg iron-ore project.
In its interim results statement for the period ended December 31, the company said it was engaged in discussions with resources companies with similar infrastructure needs within the Waterberg region, where the anticipated Moonlight project is located.
“These companies, particularly those within the coal mining sector, have similar infrastructure requirements to Ferrum, and initial discussions have led to a potentially more optimal outcome than is being contemplated in the ongoing DFS,” the company said in a statement.
The resource-rich Waterberg region is a burgeoning mining district in South Africa, with large resources of coal and iron-ore. However, there is not enough rail capacity to transport the resources along already crowded corridors to ports for export.
