Report hails expansion of Africa's internet infrastructure

A new report, produced by Internet World Stats, has claimed that infrastructure improvements have driven growth in Africa's internet and broadband sector, Peace FM Online has reported.

This is largely thanks to wireless access technologies and lower tariffs, the report said.

Internet World Stats said that across the continent, broadband was increasingly replacing dial-up internet as the preferred method of connection.

"This process is already virtually completed in Africa’s more developed markets," the reported.

Africa is, of course, the world's most rapidly growing market for mobile telephony. The continent also boasts the title of housing some of the fastest growing fixed-line markets in the world.

Earlier this month, MTN, one of Africa's leading internet firms, announced plans to invest significant sums of money in the internet infrastructure in Nigeria.

As much as N214 billion has already been earmarked for network expansion in the country this year, according to Wale Goodluck, MTN Nigeria's corporate services executive.
