No dispute on private sector role in infrastructure – Gigaba

Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba has denied that any disagreement exists between him and Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan over the potential for the private sector to play a role in South Africa’s R3.2-trillion infrastructure programme.
Speaking on Radio 702 on Monday, Gigaba said the State-owned companies (SoCs), such as Transnet and Eskom, were already funding major capital investments directly from their balance sheets, as well as through finance raised on the local and international bond markets. But he added that the financing model for the bigger, multidecade investment programme had not yet been fully developed.
There were a “variety of options available” and various financing and delivery models would be explored.
In his Budget address, Gordhan said that “no good project” would be short of funding and indicated that there was a role for the private sector to play in the delivery of infrastructure.
