Nigerian airports set for upgrade work

The Nigerian Ministry of Aviation has announced that it is to invest substantial sums in upgrading 11 of the airports owned by the federal government, This Day reports.

In a statement, the Ministry explained that the work is to be funded by royalties paid by airlines that operate in countries where Nigerian firms do not.

The current fund stands at $74 million, all of which is to be used to ensure that the airports offer an improved service.

"Worried by the scale of infrastructure deficit at the nation's airports, the current Aviation Minister initiated fresh processes to access the already approved $60 million from the BASA fund to form part of the resources required to execute the remodelling of 11 airports across the country in the first phase," the statement read.

Senior officials within the Nigerian government recently conceded that major infrastructure improvements are needed if the country is to meet it long-term economic targets.
