Nigeria: Oben power plant closed for upgrade

12 août 2012

The Oben gas power plant will be shut down intermittently for two weeks in order to complete a scheduled upgrade operation, owner Seplat Petroleum Development Company Limited said to Nigerian newspaper This Day.

In a statement released by head of corporate communications Mr Emmanuel Otokhine, it was explained that a "significant amount of money" had been invested in the project although the amount itself was undisclosed.

Mr Otokhine also stated that the shutdown would form the final part of the upgrade and extend the lifespan of the plant by at least 20 years.

It is understood that the plant's output will be reduced by 50 per cent for the first week, while the second stage of the operation will see the plant shut down entirely.

The chief executive of Seplat Mr Austin Avuru said that the plant upgrade is another step in the direction of providing abundant, clean and cheap fuel to Nigeria, Ghana, Benin and Togo.
