New green data centre launched in South Africa

The first green data centre in South Africa has been launched by Dimension Data, the information technology services firm.

According to Dimension, the overarching purpose of the new data centre, known as the Randview, is to reduce client power cost.

In addition, the new environmentally-friendly green data centre will increase productivity and also improve disaster resilience, engineeringnews.co.za has reported.

And throughout most of the year, the data centre will be able to operate without air conditioning.

"Cooling is the largest item on a data centre bill, so reducing the need for compressor-based air conditioning has a significant impact on a client's data centre costs," explained Barry Hatfield, IS business development manager for cloud solutions.

The data centre, Mr Hatfield continued, boasts a power use efficiency of 1.4, which is lower than the industry average of 2.5.

There are currently 11 IS data centres throughout the continent, four of which are found in Gauteng, South Africa.
