Ethiopia secures $125 million loan for road

Phase two of the construction of a vital road link in Ethiopia is to begin after the country secured a loan from the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The $125 million (£79.2 million) will go towards financing the building of the Mombasa-Nairobi-Addis road, part of the Trans-African Highway network project.

It is expected that the road will develop transport linkage and improve trade between Kenya and Ethiopia.

According to Ethiopia's minister of finance and economic development Sufian Ahmen, the loan highlights the commitment of the AfDB to the country's development.

As part of the programme, Ethiopia will be required to improve the standard of its 193 km-long Ageremariam-Yabelo-Mega road, as well as invest in boarder and roadside infrastructure.

It was recently announced that construction will begin on the Winelands road project in South Africa, at a cost of around R10 billion (£800 million). The finished link is expected to span 175 km across the country.
