AfDB seeks to support transport infrastructure project

24 avril 2012

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has confirmed its interest in supporting the improvement of transport infrastructure between Kenya, South Sudan and Ethiopia, The Star has reported.

According to Gabriel Negatu, regional director of the AfDB in east Africa, there is scope for the Bank to get involved with the ambitious project, owing to the fact that it has expertise in the areas of railway and transport infrastructure.

Talks, in fact, have already been held with the Kenyan government regarding supporting the project.

Speaking about the AfDB's potential involvement, Mr Negatu said: "At this early stage, the bank will work with government to carry out and complete the preliminary studies, design issues, financial engineering. Some areas we will lead, where we have the competence and other areas we will work with others and allow others to lead."

If the project comes to fruition, it should help to improve the flow of goods and people through the three African states.
