The Members’ Meeting of the Infrastructure Consortium for Africa (ICA) was held November 22nd-23rd at the Sheraton Hotel in Tunis, Tunisia. Co-chaired by Max-Olivier Gonnet of the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, and Alex Rugamba, Director of the NEPAD, Regional Integration and Trade Department at the African Development Bank (AfDB), the meeting gave ICA members the opportunity to review ICA activities in 2011 and provide strategic guidance for 2012.

ICA’s international membership was on full display at the meeting, with representatives from the Agence Française de Développement, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Commission, the French Ministry of Foreign & European Affairs, the French Treasury, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the German Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), the World Bank, the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and the AfDB in attendance.

In addition, the participation of new potential ICA members, including India, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Turkey, was welcomed by all - a result of the May 2011 decision to expand ICA membership from G8 to G20 countries.

The agenda for the 2-day meeting covered ICA expansion, in-depth discussion of ICA’s role in the G20 outcomes, future direction for the ICA Sector Platforms (Energy, Transport and Water), ICA’s role in PIDA, and the Initiative for Risk Mitigation in Africa (IRMA).

The meeting also presented a large variety of new infrastructure-related knowledge and information products, including beta versions of two upcoming additions to the ICA website: the Knowledge Center, an open platform for sharing documentation on infrastructure, and an updated Project Preparation User Guide that is now a dynamic online tool. In addition, the EIB presented its GIS system, and AfDB representatives presented the Africa Infrastructure Country Diagnostic (AICD) / Africa Infrastructure Knowledge Program (AIKP), the NEPAD Infrastructure Project Preparation Facility (IPPF), and Sokoni – the online marketplace for African Infrastructure Projects.

In conclusion, Members expressed their continued support of the ICA Secretariat, commending the quality of ICA knowledge products and ICA’s effective implementation of its mandate.
