New gas pipeline between Algeria and Spain

9 September 2010

Spain and Algeria want to develop their cooperation in the energy sector, according to a press release from the Ministry of Energy received by the APS press agency.

The Algerian Energy Minister Mr. Yousfi had talks last Tuesday with the Spanish Minister for Industry, Mr. Miguel Sebastien, on a visit to Algiers, to discuss the "development and reinforcement of the relationship of cooperation between Algeria and Spain in the energy sector".

The discussions chiefly concerned the supply of Spain with natural gas, via the Maghreb Europe gas pipeline (GME).

Also on the menu at the discussions was a second gas pipeline named "Medgaz", which will link Béni-Saf to Almeria in Spain, and which will shortly come into operation.

A few days previously, Mr. Yousfi had inspected the project for a crude oil processing plant located in the south of the industrial zone of Hassi Messaoud, according to elmoudjahid.com.

It processes 300,000 barrels of crude a day. The project managers believe that this new oilfield will give a major boost to energy capacities in the next few years.
