LION-2 fiber-optic cable construction contract signed at Mayotte

29 September 2010

On September 27 2010, telephone operators Mauritius Telecom, Orange, Emtel and France Télécom ont signed a LION II fiber optic cable construction contract at Mayotte.

This signature marks the launch of the cable-laying works to link Madagascar with Kenya, with junction points at Mayotte and in the Seychelles.

The investment amounts to more than 76 million dollars. It is planned to start service in the first half of 2012, reports the site Orange info.

The new network will offer high-speed Internet using the latest technology, with a speed of 1280 gigabits of data per second.

In Tunisia, Orange Telecom has also this week launched the iPhone 4, making this country the first in Africa to launch this model, reports the AFP agency.

Users will thus be able to access 3G Internet services on their telephones. An agreement for a third generation (3G) telephony licence was also signed this month by Tunisie Télécom.
